What is an Apprenticeship?
The Local 5 PA Apprenticeship program is a joint venture between Local 5 PA Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers and the Union Contractors. Most programs last approximately four years.
What trades are involved?
Brick and Block laying, Tile setting, Tile finishing, Refractory work, Terrazzo, Concrete, Pointing, Cleaning and Caulking, Plastering
What are the benefits of the Union Apprenticeship Program?
Thanks to a strong union and a high demand for specialized skills, the trowel trades workers are among the best paid workers in the nation. Benefits like health insurance and pension plans along with annuity plans in some areas are provided for union craftworkers.
Work in the future?
All of the trades in the B.A.C. look very attractive now, and the future by all indicators looks positive for a need of more skilled trowel trades worker.

The International Masonry Training and Education Foundation provides training, certifications and continuing education programs to the members of the International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers. These programs begin with pre-job training and training for apprentices, and continue throughout a craftworker’s career in brick, stone, tile, marble, terrazzo, pointing-caulking- cleaning, refractory, plaster, cement and mosaic work. New cladding systems and installation technologies are also emerging, and IMTEF provides advanced training for these opportunities as well. IMTEF is funded through a grant from the International Masonry Institute, a labor-management organization created by the members of BAC and the contractors who employ them.
The John J. Flynn International Training Center in Bowie, Maryland, offers training in all BAC crafts: brick, tile, terrazzo, marble, stone, PCC, plaster, cement, and refractory. Training is offered for BAC members at all career levels. The $30 million training campus designed by Stanley Tigerman, FAIA, to “celebrate” all the masonry materials includes classrooms, design studios, meeting rooms, recreation facilities, and dormitory rooms. The Flynn Center also hosts educational programs for the design and building professions, and research and development of new products, applications, and constructability issues.
